What began as an ode to some of the organ greats in soul jazz, such as delivering their own take on the works of Jimmy Smith and Captain Jack McDuff, soon turned into something more. A movement towards being a band that can appeal to almost any audience, room, and vibe. Melody, dynamics, and groove...from the soft and surreal to deep funk. From swinging soul...all the way to the thumping metal grind...no musical stone gets unturned. McTUFF is about letting it all go and having fun, a moment of time to remember the groove laid down by the soul masters as well as introduce original works of their own.
With the caliber of musicianship, honesty, and improvisational experience... combined with a love of all styles and genres of music, MCTUFF combines the ingredients to show live audiences that no show is the same.
McTuff lays down a blistering hard groove met - both literally and figuratively - at the altar by traditional jazz and blues melodies and set free by funk's irreverent attitude...There is a timeless quality to [their] sound; their result more of an artistic rendering as opposed to a direct copy of any original. - Court Scott, JamBase

The 20th Anniversary Pinot Noir is a commemorative collective of the finest vineyard designates Willamette Valley has to offer, just as McTuff unites some of today's most recognized jazz and groove masters. Both were created in tribute to their respective roots, and harken back to a storied past that continues to evolve.
From the start they both exhibit a complex, yet graceful blend of unique characteristics. The deep floral nose of the wine sets an early tone that enhances the overall flavor profile, just as D'vonne Lewis' multi-layered drum approach and Joe Doria's simultaneous left-hand bass lines and right-hand comping on organ set the stage for showcasing rare musical exploration. There is a refined interplay of components to both, the wine with notes of vanilla, cherry and blackberry from Shea, Freedom Hill, Temperance Hill and Vista Hills vineyards. Musically, Skerik on sax and Andy Coe on guitar both reside within the overall melodic structure, but along with Joe and D'vonne, they trade off masterful improvisations that willfully take the the band and listeners on a different journey every time. |
